With Nuamah doubtful for key Africa Cup qualifiers, Ayew wants a fresh start at Leicester

Nuamah made an impression at Lyon’s Stade Olympique, but he only played 17 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Mohamed Salisu’s AS Monaco on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was forced off the field with a thigh injury and appeared disappointed as Lyon’s medical staff assessed the severity of the injury.

This was his second consecutive start in Ligue 1 this season.

It is unclear whether Nuamah will be able to join his Black Stars teammates for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on September 5, followed by an away trip to Niger in Niamey on September 9.

Nuamah has been an important part of Addo’s rebuilding strategy, appearing in all four games during his second season as Black Stars coach this year. On June 6, he scored a goal in Ghana’s 2-1 win over Mali in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Bamako.

While Nuamah’s availability is uncertain, coach Addo can count on midfielder Majeed Ashimeru, who returned to action after more than two months out with a calf injury. Ashimeru played a key role in Real Anderlecht’s 1-0 win over Dinamo Minsk in the first leg of their Europa League final qualifier at MezÅ‘kövesdi Városi Stadion last Friday.

Ashimeru last played for the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire on January 22, when the Black Stars drew 2-2 with Mozambique.
Meanwhile, Black Stars veteran Jordan Ayew said he is looking for a new challenge and energy after making his debut for Leicester City in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

Ayew joined the former Premier League champions from Crystal Palace last Thursday and said he is looking forward to helping the club achieve their ambitions following their return to the top flight.

He joins forces with fellow Black Stars player Abdel-Fatawu Issahaku, who played a key role in Leicester’s promotion and subsequently signed a long-term contract.

Despite his vast experience, with 212 appearances for Crystal Palace and 275 in the English top flight over six seasons, Ayew is determined to prove himself at his new club and make an immediate impact.

“Even though I’m 32 years old, I still have a lot to improve on,” said Ayew. “I’m not here to hang out; I’m here to work hard and help the team achieve its goals. I’m sure it will be a successful season for us and the fans too.”

Ayew also praised his young compatriot, Issahaku, who performed well during his loan at Leicester City last season and helped the team return to the Premier League.

“I’m happy for him (Issahaku) because he’s doing very well,” Ayew said. “He’s young and has a bright future, but I’m here to support him and others. We need to use our experience to guide the young players, and I hope they can support me. Everything depends on teamwork.”

He made his debut for the Ghana national team in 2010 and has since won more than 100 caps for his country, participating in two World Cups in 2014 and 2022 and six Africa Cup of Nations, helping Ghana win the runner-up in 2015.
