Schools and roads closed after more flooding

A number of schools and highways have been closed as Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Hertfordshire continue to experience severe rain and floods.

Sharnbrook Academy in North Bedfordshire has been closed to students, while Bedford Borough Council announced a number of road restrictions on X early Friday.
Several flood warnings remain in effect near Bedford, Milton Keynes, and Shefford, as well as sections of Hertfordshire.

It comes as Woburn in Bedfordshire has been named the wettest place in the UK after receiving 232.4mm (9.1in) of rain this month.

REACT Disaster Response crisis response teams have been sent in Bedford and Northampton to assist residents following the flooding of numerous properties.
Hertfordshire County Council said that 45 properties in Hitchin were also inundated after the River Purwell burst its banks early Friday morning.

A message on Sharnbrook Academy’s Facebook page informed parents that “three out of four routes into the village are currently closed” and that “extensive road closures are in operation on local routes.”

“A significant number of staff and students are unable to safely get to school,” according to the message.
Emergency crews have been deployed to Paula Radcliffe Way (A6) north of Bedford to deal with flooding that has closed the road in both directions.

Lincroft Academy in Oakley also declared that it would be closed for the day due to flooding roads in the vicinity.
Oakley Road in Bromham has been closed due to emergency operations by UK Power Networks.

According to police, there was a crash on the A505 Baldock Bypass with a vehicle overturning in wet weather.

In Buckinghamshire, the A422 in Chicheley, near Milton Keynes, was partially submerged and closed.

According to scientists, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather occurrences.
