Mbappe, who had failed to score in his previous three La Liga games, scored for the club for the first time in the UEFA Super Cup against Athletic.
The 25-year-old was a PSG summer signing and remains PSG’s all-time top scorer with 256 goals.
His first goal came on his 25th shot of the La Liga season, while the penalty came on his 26th shot. That’s more shots than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues.
Real Betis had an early chance to score when Abd Ezarzuli headed wide from close range, and Barcelona loanee Vitor Roque saved the ball with his first touch on the bench.
Spanish champions Madrid also had plenty of chances, with Mbappe failing to score seven times before scoring and Eder Militao and Ernesto Valverde testing the goalkeeper.
Vinicius’ shot also missed the post and hit the post.
Madrid remain unbeaten after four league games despite trailing Barcelona by four points. Betis has only scored one point in its first three games.
