Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan passes away

Tributes are pouring in for American rapper Rich Homie Quan after his death was confirmed by authorities on Thursday.

The artist, who was in his early 30s, died in Atlanta, Georgia, the Fulton County coroner said.

The cause of death is unknown, and local medical officials say an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is DeQuantes Devontay Lamar, was one of Atlanta’s best-known contemporary rappers.

He rose to prominence in the rap world in the mid-2010s, finding mainstream success with his 2013 hit “Type of Way” and releasing the popular “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015.

He was nominated for multiple BET Awards and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and People’s Champ.

He also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James.

According to Atlanta music venue Masquerade, Rich Homie Quan was born in October 1989, the oldest of three brothers, and grew up in a single-parent home. He originally dreamed of becoming a baseball player, but eventually went into music.

He has spoken candidly about his childhood in various interviews, and in 2011, he spent 15 months in prison for his involvement in a series of thefts.

After getting out of prison, he devoted himself to music, and by the mid-2010s, he had become a big name in the rap world.

Tributes for the artist have been pouring in from across the rap world since his death was announced.

Singer Jacques was one of the first to offer his condolences. “Rest in peace, my brother Rich Homie Quan,” he said on X. A subsequent post added, “I love you forever,” and called the rapper a “legend.”

2 Chainz posted a tribute on Instagram, writing, “Damn bro, I just spoke to you about the video shoot. Special prayers for you and your family and for everyone who’s battling anything. My condolences.”

Rapper Quavo also posted to Instagram, writing, “God be with us. Never thought we’d be a part of this journey,” above a photo of himself, Rich Homie Quan, and several other artists.
Alex Twomey, an engineer who worked with Quan for many years, said of the artist, “One of the most amazing people I’ve ever worked with and a true artist. Truly sad news. Rest in peace.”
